Hospital and Health Systems

Much of my current work focuses on improving efficiency and effectiveness of health care systems, particularly with regards to health care outcomes, academic medical centers, and heart failure patients. My work on housestaff workload was one of the key examples in the Institute of Medicine’s 2008 report on Resident Duty Hours regarding outcomes from resident physician caseload. My work on hospital variation demonstrated serious flaws in analyses of costs and outcomes for hospitals during the discussions around health care reform. I recently led a $9.9 million comparative effectiveness randomized controlled trial of remote patient monitoring to determine its effect on reducing rehospitalizations among heart failure patients.
