Sensory over-responsivity is a hyper-active, prolonged, or exaggerated reaction to sensory stimuli, such as loud sounds, flashing lights, and other stimuli that can provoke a response. SOR can be demonstrated in individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), though this does not mean that all individuals with ASD experience SOR. People can have a variety of responses to different stimuli. Examples of sensory responses can be seen below.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a safe and non-invasive tool used to take pictures of the brain. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) measures brain activity by detecting changes in blood flow in different parts of the brain. There are lots of different tasks and games that you might complete inside the scanner as a part of one of our studies! These include things like watching a movie, playing games where you identify faces, or listening to different sounds.
